How to Pack the Seemingly Unpackable

You’ve started packing clothes, cutlery, tools, and books and safely tucked these small, invincible items inside a box. What about Grandma’s china, the bookcase, and your oversized TV? Unless you’re ready to downsize, you’ll likely struggle to properly pack the seemingly unpackable.

In this post, we’ll highlight some of the most infamously tricky items to pack with tips on how to get it done from your favourite local movers.

Fragile Items

Glass, crystal, and china are small enough to fit in a box and breakable in equal measure. Cushion is your friend. Any layer of softness will reduce the risk of breakage. Towels, blankets, and pillows will come in handy.

Plants

The good news is that these aren’t usually huge, but being filled with soil, they can be a little heavy (not to mention the breakable ceramic pot). We recommend keeping them where they can stay healthy until the end of your move.

There is a much better chance the plant will stay healthy if the move is quick, so keep it where it usually stays until everything else is done. Then in one trip, take them all.

Large Furniture

We can’t blame you – leaving these items behind is tempting. Large items like couches, dressers, or fridges can be a nightmare to move, even for professionals. While we can’t promise the process will be enjoyable, with some preplanning, you can get it done.

What do we mean by preplanning?

  1. Create a clear path between where the item currently sits and ensure there are as few obstacles in your way as possible.
  2. Remove breakables from the walls.
  3. If the object in question has smaller parts that can fall off (think dresser drawers), then make sure they are taped or strapped shut.
  4. Consider what needs to be simply discarded.
  5. Find some strong people. Not always possible, but it does make it easier.

Children

Moving with kids can be stressful for kids and adults alike, especially if your kids are young.

If the move is small, say from one side of the city to another, then we suggest sending the children to stay with the grandparents for moving days. Explaining what will happen to them beforehand is essential to decrease the chances of the children getting upset.

Feeling Better About Your Move?

There you have it. Do you feel better about packing the seemingly unpackable? We hope so. Moving is stressful, but with these tips, some planning, and a little help, the move will be over before you know it. And if you need extra muscle, larger moving trucks, or storage, contact Western Moving for assistance.
