If you’re gearing up for a move, there are a lot of things that need to get done. Not only do you need to make sure everything is safely packed and ready to go for moving day, but you also need to coordinate other aspects of your life like kids, work, and more.

So, many people wonder when they should start packing for their move. After all, no one wants to be rushed in the last few days of the process!

Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you to understand when you should start packing for your move.

How many possessions do you own?

Moving is a time when many people realize just how much stuff they really own. That storage room you’ve neglected for the past ten years? The overflowing closet? The garage?

These are all places where your belongings tend to build up. Many people even forget about most of the things they’ve put in these areas.

Make sure to do a full sweep of your house and property so you have a good idea of how much stuff needs to be packed.

After that, you can begin to devise a plan. For example, you might decide on packing one room per day. This is much easier (and less stressful) than scrambling to pack up your entire house in just a couple of days.

How far are you moving?

Needless to say, the farther away from your current city that you are moving, the more planning will be required. For example, if you’re moving to a new country, you might have to arrange things like visas or immunizations for yourself and your children.

It’s best to have all of these things planned out ahead of time so that as your moving date approaches, all you need to worry about is making sure your belongings are packed!

What other responsibilities do you have?

One of the ways most people fall short during a move is by neglecting their other responsibilities.

For example, do you need to take the kids to school? What do you need to get done at your job? Will you have time to hit the gym and keep your health a priority?

These things are all extremely important.

When planning your move, don’t just consider the things that are directly related to the relocation, but also remember not to forget about those daily life tasks.

How many people are helping you with the move?

How far in advance you should start packing for your move also depends on the amount of help you’re getting.

Are your friends and family going to lend a helping hand? If so, you’ll probably need less time compared to if you’re doing it all by yourself.

If your friends and family are occupied, you can also consider enlisting the help of a moving company.
