At Western moving, we understand how stressful the moving process can be. Packing, hauling, unpacking, organizing – the list of things to do seems nearly endless at times. However, one of the biggest challenges you’ll have to face is adjusting to life in your new neighborhood.

Here are 3 things you should do after moving to make the transition as smooth as possible:

Get Your Bearings

Once your belongings have been unpacked in your house, take a leisurely walk or go for a drive in your new neighborhood/area. This will help you get an idea of your surroundings. During this outing, you can look for the stores you usually shop at, parks for your kids to play at, the nearest hospital – all the essentials.

This simple act of knowing where everything is will begin to set your mind at ease in an unfamiliar place.

Meet Your Neighbors

After you’ve gotten your bearings, it’s time to meet the neighbors. After all, you might be living next to these people for many years to come. May as well start off your relationship on the right foot!

Consider bringing them a small gift or card and introduce yourself. This small gesture could be the starting point for a friendship that could last years. Also, if you have children, introducing them to your neighbors is a good idea. This way, you’re neighbors will help keep an eye on your child and be more likely to let you know if they see them playing in the street or talking to strangers.

Having an easy-going relationship with your neighbors also carries a number of other benefits. For example, if you go away on a holiday you can entrust them with the responsibility of looking after your pets or watering your household plants.

Set Up Your Utilities and Security

One of the first things you should do after moving into your new home is research the different utility companies in the area. For example, which service provider are you going to choose for the internet? Are you going to have cable TV? What’s the best company for electricity, heat, water, and other basic needs?

It helps to ask around at a few houses in your neighborhood. Chances are, everyone will be in a general consensus with who is the best service provider in your area.

Also, make sure you have proper security measures installed in your house. Whether there’s a neighborhood prankster who spends his extra dollars on eggs and toilet paper, or a criminal looking for vulnerable points of entry to your home, you want to make sure you and your family are protected.

A good place to start is by making sure all doors have deadbolts. You might want to also consider installing a doorbell camera or in-home security system.
