It’s no secret that moving can be a financially straining process. However, that’s not to say it’s impossible to move on a budget. In this post, we outline 4 fantastic strategies to help you save money when hiring movers.

What are you waiting for, let’s get moving!

1. Choose Your Dates Carefully

It’s more expensive to move during certain times of the year compared to others. For example, during the summer, movers might be overrun with clients. In this case, their only option will be to jack up their price.

Or, perhaps a mover will charge more during the cold winter months because the unfavourable conditions add an element of difficulty to the move.

If you’re looking to save money when hiring movers, it’s important to always ask them if rates vary based on the time of year.

2. Pack Your Own Possessions

Most moving companies provide packing services, however, if you’re looking to save money hiring movers, you might want to consider packing some of your belongings yourself.

However, a word of warning – if you decide to pack your own belongings, make sure you invest in the proper packing materials. Failing to do so can result in you damaging your belongings and paying more to repair/replace them than if you hired a professional to do the packing in the first place!

3. Downsize Before You Move

One of the best ways to save money when hiring movers is to downsize before your move. This is a great opportunity to take a long hard look at all of your belongings and determine which of them you actually use.

Do you have any duplicate items? Is there a kitchen appliance that hasn’t seen the light of day for years?

If so, you might want to consider getting rid of these things before moving to your new home. Not only will this mean you need less space in the moving truck (resulting in less cost) but you can also sell these items for a profit to help fund your move. It’s a win-win!

4. Understand What You’re Paying For

It’s important to understand the fee structure of the moving company you’re working with. This will help you avoid any hidden fees or surprises when it’s time to pay the bill. Some movers provide full-service moving, which often means they’ll take care of everything (packing, transport, unpacking, etc.) for one set price.

Other movers charge by the individual service. Factors like the distance you’re moving, the weight of your belongings, and other similar considerations also come into play.

It’s always important to understand exactly what you’re paying for before deciding to work with a moving company.
