This is part one in a two-part series on most common moving mistakes (See part 2 here).

Preparing for a move? Here are three common moving mistakes to avoid:

1. Leaving Packing Too Late

The first and most common moving mistake you should be sure to avoid is leaving your packing until the last minute. This can cause a number of problems. For example, if you’ve gone to the trouble of hiring a professional moving company for your relocation, packing is an extra fee they will charge.

So if you want to save money, make sure all of your belongings are packed up and ready to go a few days before your actual moving day.

Here’s some more helpful information about when to start packing for a move.

2. Not Investing in The Proper Packing Materials

In order to keep your belongings safe during your move, it’s vital that they are properly packed. To do so, you need to make sure you have the proper packing materials. For example, delicate china, breakable mirrors, and expensive TV’s cannot just be placed in regular boxes – they require their own special containers to be kept safe. Here are a few of the different types of packing materials you should consider for your next move:

  • China Barrels
  • Mirror Cartons
  • TV Boxes
  • Mattress Bags
  • Packing Paper

If you choose to invest in a professional packing service, they will often pick out these materials for you.

3. Not Labelling Your Boxes

Many first-time movers are guilty of this important oversight. They figure they’ll simply remember what’s in each of their boxes and where they’re supposed to go once they move into their new home. However, this is easier said than done.

Failing to properly label your boxes can present a number of problems, both for you and anyone else who is helping with your move. First, it will make the unpacking process much harder than it needs to be. Without labels, the only way to figure out which boxes should go in which rooms is to break their seal and look inside.

Second, it can even present a saftey risk. Many back injuries have been caused by people going to pick up a seemingly harmless box, ontly to realize that it’s deceptivly heavy.

Finally, forgetting to label your boxes can result in damages to your possessions. For example, if you forget to label a box containing breakable items as “Fragile,” it might not be handled with the appropriate care.

In order to prevent these things from happening, here are a few labels you should consider adding to your boxes:

  • Fragile
  • Heavy
  • Valuable
  • Ect

Also, if you know which room in your new house the boxes will go, it’s also a good idea to write that on your boxes.
