Uprooting your family and moving to a completely new country can be an extremely stressful undertaking.

You have to get used to the new food, cultural customs, language, and people. Not only that, but you’re also probably balancing all of these things with trying to find a job to support yourself.

Here are 6 ways to adjust to moving to a new country:

1. Decide Where You’ll Shop

Obviously, wherever you find yourself, food is pretty important. That’s why one of the first things you should do is scout out the local grocery stores and find out which ones best match your pallet.

2. Stay in Touch With Friends

When separated by thousands of miles, it can be easy to lose touch with old friends. To prevent this from happening, make sure to stay in touch. In the digital age, this is very easy to do with a face-time call or even a simple text.

3. Get Your House in Order

Whatever goes on outside, your house is the one place you can always go to relax. That’s why putting all your belongings in the proper place is one of the first things you should do.

This will help you feel at ease and really settle into your new place.

4. Explore

Chances are, you’ll be pretty curious after moving to a new country. That’s perfectly normal – feel free to explore!

Talk to locals and figure out where the best places to go are, or do a simple Google search to see what you should check out first!

5. Talk to Locals

Nothing will make a new country feel like home quite like making new friends. If there are a few familiar faces in your neighborhood, you’ll feel that much better about your situation.

In order to make new friends in a new country, feel free to begin striking up conversations with the locals who live in the area. Many people avoid doing this because they don’t want to be a bother, however, many locals will be more than happy to tell you about their culture.

They’ll probably be just as interested in you as you are in them!

6. Find Your Preferred Mode of Transportation

Navigating the roads in a foreign country can be a daunting task. This is especially true if you’re moving from North America to Europe (or vice-versa) and they drive on a different side of the road.

After you’ve settled into your new home, your next step should be figuring out how to get around the city. Are you going to drive yourself? Take the bus? The Train? Maybe even walk or ride a bike?

Regardless, it’s a good idea to start thinking about the transportation that will get you where you need to be when you need to be there.
